Our Story

Historic Jubilee Baptist Church
Located at 525 Old Rutherford Road in Taylors, South Carolina, Historic Jubilee Baptist Church stands as the oldest African American church in the Upper Piedmont region of South Carolina. Affectionately known as “The Mother Church,” Jubilee carries a rich and sacred legacy rooted in faith, resilience, and freedom.
Founded in 1864 during the era of slavery, Jubilee was born out of a deep yearning for spiritual independence and authentic worship. While its beginnings were initiated by Reverend F. Whilden, a white minister, this congregation was uniquely established independent of white church governance—making it a powerful symbol of self-determination and divine purpose among African Americans in that time.
In its earliest days, members gathered faithfully in homes, praising God and nurturing a growing community of believers until resources were secured to purchase land and erect a house of worship. From those humble beginnings, Jubilee has blossomed into a beacon of hope and heritage.
The name “Jubilee” itself reflects a profound biblical and historical significance—symbolizing liberation, restoration, and celebration. It echoes the freedom experienced by enslaved people and points us to an even greater truth found in John 8:36: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” This freedom in Christ continues to define our identity and mission today.
The church’s first elected pastor, Reverend Jerry Foster, laid a strong spiritual foundation that has endured through generations. Today, under the dynamic leadership of our 23rd pastor, Rev. Dr. Reggie Garrett, Jubilee continues to flourish—growing spiritually, strengthening our community impact, and advancing the Kingdom of God.
With a proud past and a purposeful present, Historic Jubilee Baptist Church stands as a living testimony of God’s faithfulness.
And by faith, we boldly declare—the best is yet to come!
